Forward March

What’s the point?

As that famous philosopher and Saturday Night Live host, Aziz Ansari once said (just this past Saturday), “If you look at our country’s history, change doesn’t come from presidents. Change comes from large groups of angry people — and if day one is any indication, you are part of the largest group of angry people I have ever seen.”  Millions of women & children and the men who love & support them gathered in Washington, D.C. and all around the country this weekend to march for their rights, and the response from some quarters was “why bother?” hope-sign I’m talking of course about the Women’s March on Washington this past Saturday.  Approximately half a million women & men showed up in D.C. to take a stand in support of women’s rights and the rights of families and children in general.  Many thousands more turned out to satellite marches in more than 600 cities across America (at least one in all 50 states, for a total of 3 million or more people nationwide).

Coast-ing Part 2

Suppose they gave a landslide and no one came? Part 1 of this post covered one reason why Trump supporters’ efforts to convince us that he actually won the popular vote (if only you exclude a few states) are more concerning than they might appear at first glance. map-2-pretty-colorful  But there’s also a second reason I think we need to pay attention to what Trump supporters are doing when they push this idea: they’re not not just trolling, it’s a genuine attempt by Trump and his people to give the impression that he won an overwhelming victory.  They then use that impression to claim widespread support for their unpopular actions.

Coast-ing to Victory

There are a lot of easy ways to get under Donald Trump’s very thin skin, should you desire to do so.  One bittersweet method for Hillary supporters has been to point out that, though Hillary Clinton lost the election, she won the popular vote by nearly three million votes.  It took a while post-elecus-map-cartoontion for all of the votes to be tallied, so Clinton’s lead slowly climbed over the month that followed. As her edge in the popular vote grew, so did the urgency on the part of Trump supporters to convince the broader public that this lead didn’t really exist.

The Inauguration Zone

With a mere 4 days left until Inauguration Day, those of us who oppose Donald Trump can no longer live in denial or avoidance.  The day we’ve been dreading is finally upon us.  Some people’s denial about Trump’s impending presidency has consisted of dreaming that it was going to be overturned somehow.  They’ve been hoping that someone would magically intervene and say, “Wait, it doesn’t count, because of the Russians/Comey/he’s just too big a baby.”

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Interviews with Trump aide Kellyanne Conway are often painful to watch.  She rarely answers the question she’s asked or – if she does – she surrounds it with such an avalanche of words that any partial answer gets completely lost.   She lies often and easily (or so it seems), and she has a habit of deflecting questions back onto the interviewer or, unbelievably at this late date, over onto Hillary Clinton.  But two nights ago on Late Night with Seth Myers, she still managed to say something face-palm worthy.  At one point, displeased with the audience reaction to something she said about Trump, Conway responded: Continue reading

Pressing His Buttons

man-behind-curtainIt’s finally here!  The day of Trump’s much anticipated press conference arrived today, after being postponed from its earlier date in December.  And it was pretty much what you would expect from a Trump presser:  lots of boasting, lots of rambling answers, lots of deflection and a special guest appearance from Jekyll & Hyde as Trump lashed out at the news outlets that dared to publish yesterday’s sordid report about Russia, while lavishly praising the news organizations that resisted publication.

Baby Got Background

fingerprintYears ago, I spent a summer interning at the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York.  The final step before they would accept me for the internship was that I had to undergo an FBI background check.  They asked such detailed questions going so far back in time that I actually had a hard time remembering some of the information and was afraid I would accidentally tell them something that wasn’t true.  I also had to submit my fingerprints to be run through their database.  Just to be a summer intern.

Black Hole Heart

Oh wow, even by Trumpy standards this is really reaching.  Kellyanne Conway was on CNN this morning trying to defend Trump for that infamous moment early on in the campaign when he mocked a disabled reporter at one of his rallies.  The incident is back in the news because of Meryl Streep’s righteous speech at the Golden Globes last night indicting Trump’s bullying & abusive nature (done without ever even having to say his name). black-heart-2-crop
